Sprints

Short, connected sequences for the concepts pupils need most

Each LTD sprint focuses on a defined mathematical idea and builds it through a manageable sequence of practical lessons. Staff can begin from evidence, teach with consistent representations and review progress at the end.

Place value sprints

Numbers to 20: Develop quantity, composition, teen numbers and the structure of ten.

Two-digit numbers: Build tens and ones, comparison, partitioning, unitising and renaming.

Three-digit numbers: Connect hundreds, tens and ones with flexible partitioning and calculation.

Four-digit numbers: Strengthen relationships between place value units and support work with larger whole numbers.

Large whole numbers and decimals: Add only when the corresponding sprint content is confirmed for the UK intervention offer.

Addition and subtraction sprints

Part-whole understanding: Connect stories, quantities, representations and equations.

Basic fact strategies: Move from counting towards number bonds, doubles, make-ten and related strategies.

Two-digit calculation: Use place value, partitioning and efficient mental or written strategies.

Inverse relationships: Connect addition and subtraction so pupils can derive and check facts.

Multiplication and division sprints

Equal groups and arrays: Establish the structure of multiplication and connect it with repeated addition.

Sharing and grouping: Explore division meanings and connect them with multiplication.

Basic fact strategies: Use known facts and relationships to derive 2, 5, 10, 4, 8, 9, 6 and 7 times facts as appropriate.

Multiplicative relationships: Strengthen factors, multiples, inverse facts and flexible application.

What a sprint page should show

  • The concept addressed
  • Pupil behaviours that may indicate need
  • Entry check
  • Number of lessons
  • Suggested materials
  • Lesson sequence
  • Expected evidence of progress
  • Exit check
  • Links with classroom content
  • Related sprint if more support is needed

Upload guidance: replace this placeholder with the final media. Keep the same aspect ratio and recommended filename so the page layout does not shift.

Select from evidence, not age alone

Sprints should not be labelled as work for a younger year group. A pupil in Year 5 may need to strengthen a place value idea normally introduced earlier, but the teaching can still be respectful and age-appropriate.

The page should help staff choose the concept without lowering expectations for the pupil.

New sprints and updates

State clearly which sprints are available now and which are planned. Do not display empty topic cards that imply content is complete when it is not.
