Target the mathematical idea, not another page of easier questions
When pupils are struggling, more practice at the same level is not always the answer. LTD Intervention helps staff identify the underlying concept, select a focused teaching sprint and rebuild understanding through practical, carefully sequenced lessons.

Begin with what the pupil understands
A pupil may struggle with subtraction because place value is insecure. Another may know multiplication facts but not understand equal groups or inverse relationships. Diagnostic check-ups help staff look beneath the surface response and identify a sensible starting point.
The aim is to teach the missing idea, not simply move the pupil to an easier worksheet.
Focused intervention sprints
Each sprint is a short sequence of connected lessons built around a defined concept. Staff can see the intended progression, prepare the resources and teach with a consistent model over several sessions.
The sprint format keeps intervention purposeful and makes it easier to review whether the teaching has made a difference.
What each sprint includes
- Entry diagnostic or concept check
- Clear learning focus
- Short modelled lesson videos
- Detailed teaching guidance
- Hands-on activities
- Printable resources
- Independent or review tasks
- Progress monitoring
- Exit or post-check where available
- Guidance for the next teaching decision
Practical teaching, not screen-based tutoring
LTD Intervention is taught by an adult using mathematical tools, discussion and direct observation. Pupils make and explain ideas rather than clicking through a generic pathway.
This gives the teacher or teaching assistant immediate information about strategy, language and misconception.
Suitable for flexible delivery
Schools may use the sprints with individuals, pairs or small groups. They can support pupils receiving SEND provision, catch-up support or targeted teaching following assessment, provided the school selects the content based on need rather than label alone.
Session length, frequency and group size should be decided by the school and the nature of the concept.
Connect intervention with classroom teaching
Intervention is stronger when the language and representations connect with the pupil’s main maths lessons. Class teachers should know which sprint is being taught and how the pupil can use the learning back in class.
The same LTD models and progressions support this connection.
Track growth, then make a decision
Use the entry and exit evidence to decide whether the pupil is ready to return to the class sequence, needs further practice or requires a different concept to be addressed.
Avoid keeping pupils in intervention indefinitely without a clear review point.
