Start with a defined priority

A broad session on improving maths is unlikely to change much. Choose a focus such as early number, place value, additive strategies, multiplication, fractions, assessment or use of manipulatives.

Use school evidence and staff questions to decide the priority.

Possible CPD formats

Introductory session: Introduce the LTD approach, three-part lesson structure and purposeful use of tasks, tools and talk.

Topic workshop: Develop a specific area of subject knowledge and classroom practice.

Planning session: Use curriculum documents, lesson sequences and assessment evidence to plan together.

Modelled lesson day: Observe teaching, examine pupil responses and discuss the decisions made.

Implementation series: Combine training, classroom use, review and follow-up over time.

Leadership support: Help maths leads sustain the work through planning, coaching and evidence review.

Tailored, but not vague

A tailored session should still have a clear scope and outcome. The proposal should explain what will be covered, what the school needs to prepare and what staff should be able to do afterwards.

Online and on-site delivery

Live online sessions can work well for topic training and planning. On-site work is particularly valuable for modelled lessons, classroom observation and deeper implementation. The school can combine formats to manage budget and travel.

After the session

Ask staff to use a small number of agreed practices, then bring pupil work, questions or assessment evidence to a review. CPD becomes more useful when the next conversation is planned before the first session ends.
