Built from the classroom outwards
Learning Through Doing began with a practical question: how can teachers make important mathematical ideas visible and understandable without spending hours piecing every lesson together?

Why LTD was created
Teachers are often expected to cover a demanding curriculum while searching for resources, building presentations, adapting worksheets and trying to make sense of the progression between topics. The result can be a great deal of planning without enough time to think deeply about the mathematics.
LTD was created to bring those pieces together. The lesson collection combines planning, mathematical background, modelled teaching, hands-on tasks, resources, independent work and assessment.
Our belief about maths teaching
Pupils learn mathematics more securely when they can connect language, quantities, representations and symbols. Practical materials and visual models can make these connections visible, but only when the task and teacher questioning have a clear purpose.
We believe teachers deserve resources that respect their professional judgement and also give them enough detail to teach with confidence.
Guy Constable
Guy Constable is the founder of Learning Through Doing Mathematics, an experienced classroom teacher and a long-standing advocate for hands-on, conceptually focused maths teaching. His work has included primary and secondary classrooms, school consultancy and mathematics education work with the Queensland University of Technology.
Guy’s teaching and professional learning focus on helping teachers see the progression behind mathematical ideas and turn that understanding into practical classroom experiences.

Dr Judy Hartnett
Dr Judy Hartnett has worked as a teacher, lecturer, principal and mathematics consultant. Her work has focused on teacher professional development, mathematical reasoning and the development of coherent lessons and curriculum support.
Judy brings deep experience in mathematics education, school leadership and the design of resources that build teacher knowledge as well as pupil understanding.
Made by educators, tested in real settings
The LTD collection has developed through classroom teaching, school partnerships, teacher feedback and ongoing refinement. The approach has been used across a range of Australian school contexts and is now being adapted and mapped for teachers in England.
The UK collection will use UK terminology and England curriculum organisation while retaining the central LTD lesson structure and practical pedagogy.
What we are working towards
Make maths visible, moveable and meaningful.
We want teachers to feel clear about the mathematics they are teaching and pupils to experience maths as something they can explore, explain and use. We want schools to build consistency through shared understanding, not simply through shared files.
The LTD values
Clarity: Make the mathematical purpose and teaching sequence easy to understand.
Practicality: Create resources that can work in real classrooms with real time constraints.
Depth: Focus on connections, strategies and representations, not only correct answers.
Teacher growth: Build professional knowledge through the materials and support.
Honesty: Make careful claims and acknowledge that implementation matters.
