Maths Leaders

Lead the mathematics, not just the paperwork around it

Maths leadership involves curriculum decisions, staff development, assessment, resources and classroom support. LTD helps leaders keep those strands connected and focus professional conversations on what pupils are learning.

Build a coherent curriculum story

Maths leads need to explain how learning develops from Reception to Year 6, which representations support that progression and how teachers respond when pupils are not secure.

LTD planning documents provide a starting point that leaders can adapt to the school’s curriculum and context.

Develop staff, not just resources

Introducing a new lesson collection without professional discussion can lead to surface-level use. Leaders can use modelled videos, sample lessons and pupil work to explore the purpose of a task and the thinking behind it.

This helps staff move from copying an activity to understanding the pedagogy behind it.

Use assessment well

Leaders can support staff to interpret concepts and misconceptions, compare growth and decide which curriculum or CPD response is needed. The aim is to turn data into a teaching decision rather than produce a larger spreadsheet.

Support classroom consistency

Agree where consistency matters, such as language for place value, use of ten-frames or progression in calculation strategies. Leave room for teachers to respond to the class and adapt examples.

Monitoring should look for mathematical purpose and pupil thinking, not a display of identical resources in every room.

Leadership coaching

Coaching can help maths leads plan staff learning, interpret evidence, prepare modelled lessons and manage implementation. Define the purpose and frequency of coaching in the school package rather than offering unlimited support without boundaries.
