Help pupils see the connections across number, fractions and calculation
Year 5 mathematics becomes much easier to manage when pupils can connect new ideas with structures they already know. LTD uses consistent representations and carefully sequenced tasks to make those connections explicit.
Pupils exploring fraction equivalence, decimals, percentages, larger-number place value or efficient calculation strategies.

Large numbers and place value
Pupils read, write, compare, order and round increasingly large whole numbers. Place value charts and counters help them reason about the value of digits, powers of ten and the effect of multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000.
The same understanding supports work with decimals later in the year.
Efficient calculation
Pupils refine mental and written methods for all four operations. LTD lessons encourage them to estimate first, choose an appropriate approach and use inverse relationships to check.
Written methods are connected with place value and partial calculations so pupils understand the structure rather than reproduce a layout.
Factors, multiples and prime numbers
Arrays and factor models allow pupils to investigate divisibility, factor pairs, common factors, multiples and prime numbers. This understanding supports multiplication, division, fraction simplification and later algebraic thinking.
Fractions, decimals and percentages
Pupils compare, order, add, subtract and multiply with fractions in appropriate contexts. They connect fractions with decimals and percentages through number lines, area models, scaling and place value.
The sequence emphasises equivalence and unit fractions so procedures are supported by a coherent idea.
Measurement, geometry and statistics
Pupils convert units, calculate perimeter and area, estimate volume and capacity, investigate angles and properties of shapes, use coordinates and interpret data. Practical tasks give purpose to the calculations and help pupils choose suitable units and methods.

Prepare pupils for more complex application
Upper Key Stage 2 pupils need more than procedural accuracy. They need to recognise which ideas are relevant when a problem is unfamiliar. LTD lessons include comparison, explanation and application throughout the sequence so reasoning is not left until the end.
