Develop fluency without losing the meaning behind the methods

Year 4 pupils are expected to recall more facts and work with more efficient methods. LTD keeps the structure visible so fluency grows from connected understanding rather than from memorising a series of unrelated steps.

Place value as the foundation for calculation

Pupils work with four-digit numbers, compare and order values, round and use negative numbers in suitable contexts. Place value materials and charts support unitising and renaming, then connect with more abstract notation.

The focus remains on relationships between units, not only digit position.

Addition and subtraction

Written methods become more efficient when pupils understand what is being exchanged and why. LTD lessons connect place value representations with column methods, while still valuing mental calculation, estimation and checking.

Pupils compare strategies and decide when a written algorithm is useful and when a simpler mental method is more sensible.

Multiplication and division facts

Pupils work towards fluent recall through patterns and relationships. Known facts are used to derive new facts, and multiplication is connected with division, factors, multiples and scaling.

Arrays, equal groups, number lines and length models help pupils see why strategies work before practice increases speed.

Multiplying and dividing larger numbers

Place value and known facts are used to multiply and divide by one-digit numbers. Practical and visual models show partial products, partitioning and the relationship between the calculation and the written method.

Fractions and decimals

Pupils explore equivalent fractions, add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and connect tenths and hundredths with decimals. Fraction strips, number lines, area models and place value representations help pupils make links between these ideas.

Measurement, geometry and statistics

Pupils solve problems involving measure, perimeter, area, time and money. They classify shapes, investigate angles and symmetry, describe position and interpret graphs. LTD uses practical investigations to make definitions and relationships more precise.

Year 4 resources inside LTD

  • Yearly overview and topic sequences
  • Modelled videos and detailed plans
  • Place value and calculation resources
  • Multiplication strategy activities
  • Fraction and decimal models
  • Measurement and geometry investigations
  • Practice tasks and independent application
  • Concept check-ups

Multiplication Tables Check preparation

The page can acknowledge the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check without turning the curriculum into test preparation. LTD develops fact fluency through strategy, pattern and purposeful practice, then provides opportunities to strengthen recall.
