The Year 1 priority
A secure sense of number makes later calculation easier. Pupils should be able to make, represent, compare and partition numbers, use the structure of five and ten and explain how smaller parts combine to make a whole.
LTD lessons use practical materials and visual models to help pupils move beyond one-by-one counting.
Number and place value
Pupils count, read, write, compare and represent numbers within the Year 1 range. They build numbers with objects and frames, locate them on number lines and explore tens and ones as their understanding develops.
The emphasis is on what the digits and quantities mean, not only on reading the numeral correctly.
Addition and subtraction
Early calculation is developed through part-whole relationships, number bonds, counting on, counting back, doubles, near doubles and making ten. Pupils use stories, objects, ten-frames, part-part-whole models and number lines to connect actions with equations.
The lesson sequence helps pupils understand addition and subtraction as related operations.
Early multiplication and division
Pupils explore equal groups, repeated patterns, sharing and grouping through real materials and drawings. They count in useful steps and begin to connect the language of groups with simple representations.
The purpose is to establish multiplicative structure before formal fact recall becomes the focus.
Fractions
Fractions begin with fair sharing and equal parts. Pupils explore halves and quarters of shapes, objects and quantities, with careful attention to the word equal. Practical tasks help prevent the common idea that any two pieces are halves.
Measurement and geometry
Pupils compare and describe length, mass, capacity, time and money through meaningful tasks. They name, sort, build and describe common shapes, and use positional and directional language in practical contexts.
